Taunton Vale B 2 Yeovil & Sherborne B 2
The reverse fixture ended in a 5-4 defeat and this was an equally close encounter. Vale took the initiative from a short corner when the ball deflected off a diving Wayne Powell stick into Gary Stickley on the near post for an unavoidable penalty flick. Yeovil & Sherborne soon levelled with a nice father and son link up in the D. Keith Tridgell could have taken the shot but passed back to Tom with his face to goal to take the family honours. Derek Devereux limped off after 20 minutes and Y&S had to re-shape as Rupert Edwards played a good spell at left back and Gary Watson linked up well up front. Sam Holloway caused the opposition defence problems with his trademark mazy runs but the rest of the team could not keep up with him.
The Y&S defence were punished for their only error of the second half as failed clearances gave Vale their opportunity to take the lead with a cross come shot which wormed its way into the goal. Y&S showed great character and kept pressing to equalise again courtesy of the Vale keeper's clearances falling to Y&S players and it was third time lucky for Alex Hardick to slot home following rebounded shots from Paul Guest then Andrew Tuffin.
Alex Truman, Ben Casey, Dave Betts and Gary Stickley must be commended for holding firm in defence under increasing pressure in the second half with Wayne Powell making a number of crucial saves to keep the score level.
One of the better after match teas followed by Guesty's invitation to take on the captaincy next season left no time for man-of-the-match votes therefore the report writer awards it to Dave Betts for an assured display at centre back and for lasting 70 minutes.

Please note that as of 15th September 2009 Exe Hockey Club (men's section) have withdrawn from participating in the N4 Hockey League. Their one team that were due to be playing in South East Division 1 this season, have now had their fixtures removed so there is no fixture on 21st November and 6th March.
