U15 Boys Bow Out in Semi-Final of English Plate
Sunday 27th April 2008.
Cannock 5 Yeovil & Sherborne 2.
After a great run of victories our U15 boys finally ran out of steam but not before giving an excellent Cannock team a very good match, fully justifying our semi-final place. Cannock had the better of the early exchanges and soon took an early lead but Liz Herbert made some tactical changes and Yeovil and Sherborne found their feet, after a long journey, repelling the relentless Cannock attacks with determined, skillfull defending, led by Josh, and superb goalkeeping by Patrick. With Michael, Ashley and Alex defending resolutely, Rupert and Andrew were also called into defensive duties but as the half wore on they were able to push forward more. Inspired by Tom, everyone contributed well in a prolonged fightback, with Ed, Lewis and Alisdair challenging a very accomplished Cannock defense. We were now in the ascendency and nearly equalised shortly before half-time.
After the break, Cannock hit a purple patch and rattled in four goals inside 10 minutes with some flowing hockey and clinical finishing but our boys showed tremendous character to come back from this and finish as the stronger team, scoring a goal after a good move initiated by Ed, well finished by a determined Peter. Andy came on and defended well under pressure but Yeovil were not finished attacking - some good passing hockey leading to another short corner which was cleanly dispatched by Tom.
This was a very committed performance by everyone and a great achievement - well done to everyone who has played in any of the matches in our cup run. It was a pleasure to visit Cannock's Premier League set-up and we were well looked after by Jamie and his staff - thank you to them, the umpires, and to all the parents and supporters who travelled to the match. West Hockey Association Honorary Treasurer
The current West Hockey Association Honorary Treasurer, Margaret Kempster, is unable to stand again as Treasurer and without a replacement the West HA will be unable to function.
The West HA urgently seeks a volunteer to stand for election as Hon. Treasurer at the Annual General Meeting to be held in Taunton on Thursday 5th June.
As an Officer of the West HA, the Treasurer attends quarterly meetings of the West Council and deals with all finance matters on behalf of the Association.
This role may be of interest to an ex player who is keen to retain an involvement in hockey at Regional level or a parent who is willing to support West Hockey. Therefore, please ensure that this plea is circulated widely.
If you are interested please contact Margaret Kempster for further information mkempster@tiscali.co.uk or 01242 575771 |
Somerset Finals Day - Sat 19th April at Millfield
A veritable feast of hockey took place at Millfield on Saturday with our Ladies Vets and Mens 1s featuring. The Ladies pushed Taunton Vale hard and the game was close at half-time but the opposition pulled ahead to win 6 - 2 in the end.
The Men, however, were successful, putting the game out of sight at half-time (5-0) with a superb display of attacking hockey, and eventually ran out 8-2 winners (Luke Hawker was named Man of The Match with his 6 (yes six) goals).

U15 Boys Good Win Puts Them Through to Semi-Final of EHA Plate
Sunday 6th April 2008
Yeovil & Sherborne 2 Eastbourne 0
Teamwork was the foundation for this excellent result. A fantastic rearguard action with committed defending and some flowing breakaway hockey from our boys gave them a well deserved win against classy opposition from Eastbourne. After weathering the early pressure we got into our stride and Tom netted from our first short corner move. Our boys put in a huge amount of effort off the ball, always providing options, but also worked well together in defence, everyone tackling well and disrupting Eastbourne's flow. We played plenty of flowing hockey ourselves and it was after another good breakout that Ed determinedly shot and followed up to score our second. Thanks to Eastbourne for travelling through the snow to play their full part in an entertaining match enjoyed by a crowd of about 40. We now play Cannock away in the Semi-Final on Sunday 27th April. Veterans Cup Competition.
Played on Sunday 16th March 2008 at a wet and windy Millfield School saw great success for the ladies with the men not doing quite so well.
The men played 3 and a half games thanks to super vet Rich Mcdermid getting upturned by a land mine that was deemed suitable to call a halt to the final game. Rich is fine and the men recorded 3 losses and a draw with Roy 'The Boy' Bartlett scoring a fine goal before retiring injured himself.
The ladies however put on a stunning performance winning all games and drawing one. Goals came from Mel Coles and Sadie Watson, 4 each. Di Darch and Karen Robinson grabbed one each. The ladies played some super hockey and should easily have secured a place in the final against Taunton Vale on the 19th April 2008.
Well done to all and thanks for turning out in appalling conditions. |

U15 Boys win through to Quarter Finals of EHA Plate Competition
Plate Competition Round 3. Sunday 2nd March 2008.
Result: Plymouth Marjon 2 Y&S 3 - this was a game of high quality where our boys put together some superb flowing hockey combined with high class defending. Having travelled to Plymouth we were a little slow out of the blocks but soon picked up the pace of the game and were not deterred when going down to a well-taken goal, having the better of the play going into half-time. Combining skill with an unending determination we twice came back to level the game when good work by Michael and George resulted in short corners - Tom netted both, following succesful execution of our recently acquired 'Rob Hill Special' routines. Plymouth Marjon continued to play great hockey but with ten minutes remaining Lewis finished off a good team move to give us the lead which we tenaciously hung on to. The boys played an excellent team game with everyone playing well and supporting each other. The umpiring was very good and Plymouth Marjon were both accommodating hosts and a very good team, playing their full part in an exciting, open game of hockey. Well done boys, we now play Eastbourne in the Quarter Finals on Sunday 6th April at home. To see all Plate results to date please click here.

Mens Indoor Team Guarantee Place in Next Years National League
A really competitive effort from YSHC in the National Indoor League Division 2 saw them finish fifth and hence guarantee their place in next years National Indoor League Division 2 (North or South) in 2008/9 without the need to qualify from the Regional Competition.
YSHC were up against Bowdon (the eventual winners, whose outdoor team plays in the National Premier League), Bath Buccs (outdoor team National Division 1), Holcombe and University of Birmingham (both of whose outdoor teams also play in the National Leagues) - some very good company. Close games against Holcombe and Birmingham put our boys in a position where, once again, a great deal rested on the last game - against Southgate (outdoor National League 1). A stirring 7 -5 win meant that we took 5th place and thus assured a place in next years Indoor National League. Well done to all involved - a great achievement.

Mens Indoor Team Through to National Division 2 Finals 2008
First there was the West Regional Indoor Championships at Exeter on 16th Dec 07 where Y&S men won their group and then won through to the final. Despite narrowly losing to Bath Buccs in the final, they were assured a place in the National Division Two (North) league competition which was played over the weekend of 5/6th January. The top three teams (out of six) in this league would meet the top three in the Division Two (South) league in the overall Division Two championships on 12/13th January.
Y&S were up against City of York, University of Birmingham, Leek, Bowdon and, lastly, City of Peterborough who they needed to beat in their last game to win through to the next round. After a 7 - 5 victory in this game they now qualify for the National Division Two League to be played in Birmingham next weekend (12/13 January) - really well done.

Good luck for next weekend. |

U16 BOYS - West Section of National Indoor Championships
Sunday 2nd December - our boys put up a very creditable performance against some strong, experienced teams. Our squad of 7 - Oscar Ouwski, Ben Casey, Josh Brooker, Alan Herbert, Tom Nitti, Jack Bartlett and Will Ireland - were up against teams which play in official indoor leagues and which had squads of 10 players. Although not making it through to the semi-finals they put up good performances against Taunton School, Kings Bruton, Canford and Exeter Cathedral School, the latter two going through to the semi-finals to meet Ashmoor and Millfield respectively with Exeter winning through to the final. The team's performance has led to them being invited to further indoor events. Thanks are due to Dave Cave for supplying indoor sticks at a good rate.
Well done boys and I know you are now looking forward to the U18s championships in the future! |
