U15 BOYS English Hockey Association Cup

First Round - Sunday 5th October 2008
Result: Yeovil & Sherborne 11 Marlborough 1
Scorers: E.Matts 7, L.Guest 2, P.Herbert, A.Easton
A tremendous team effort with plenty of movement off the ball and some flowing hockey contributed to a very accomplished performance against a good Marlborough team who never gave up. Ashley, Andy, Alex and Josh were resolute at the back and all got forward at times to support Greg and Andrew, who linked well with the forwards - Peter, Alisdair and Lewis all of whom consistently troubled the Marlborough defence. Patrick in goal kept many Marlborough attempts out but at the other end Man of the Match was Ed who linked up well, had some driving runs through the midfield and displayed clinical finishing. Well done boys. We now have a home draw in the second round of the Cup against Devizes on Sunday 9th November, push back at 1.30 but due to Devizes struggling to raise a team because of Remembrance Day commitments we have been given a walkover into the third round.

On a bitterly cold day, two well-matched teams served up some hot hockey in an exciting match. Y&S were put under early pressure by Bath but the well organised defence of Andrew Maxwell, Alex Truman, Josh Clarke and Ashley Glover soaked this up and were able to initiate some breaks out of defence. It was one such break, against the run of play, that led to Y&S scoring the opening goal as good interplay between Ed Matts and Alistair Easton culminated in an excellent run by Ed and a cool finish past the keeper. Y&S battled hard, particularly Andrew Le Page in midfield, but Bath kept up the pressure as Patrick Turner was called upon to make a number of good saves. Bath eventually levelled with a strong shot from the top of the D and the score was 1-1 at half-time.
A tactical switch saw James Baker come on at right back in the second half and Y&S pressed forward more with Greg Wheeler linking well with Lewis Guest who was putting in a number of good crosses from the right. Y&S battered at the Bath defence for most of the second half but couldn't find the back of the goal especially with Bath's keeper in impressive form. It was another goal against the run of play, this time a Bath breakout from defence, that set up a tense finish as Bath led 2-1. Still Y&S pressed forward. Substitute James Godbolt (a valuable member of the squad), along with the travelling spectators, must have been wondering if Y&S were ever going to score again when, after a goalmouth melee, Peter Herbert forced home the equaliser, to great Y&S delight. Both teams continued to attack, Josh Clarke leading the Y&S defence well, but despite all their pressure Y&S were unable to find the winner and the game went to penalty strokes where Bath won the game - an unfortunate end after a fantastic team performance of great skill and character.

Result: Millfield 0 YSHC 1
New recruit Zak was called into early action during a Millfield attack with a crucial save. Thereafter the strong defence of Mima and Calan starved the Millfield attack of possession. Boy stick and ball failed to get past them! Our midfield unit of Chris and Michael worked their magic much to the appreciation of the Millfield parents and coach who enjoyed their stick skills. In attack Daniel and Hugo kept the Millfield defence honest by finding plenty of space with their energy and enterprise. As the game progressed Calan's strong hitting was causing problems to Millfield and after many short corners the pressure counted when a strong shot from Calan bulged the back of the Millfield net. More pressure followed but Millfield defended well.

The U9's comprised many players in their first hockey match. Will, a veteran from Year 5, kept well for a team that were under pressure while learning their game. As the game progressed so did the performance and Bradley and Joe, our senior players, led the reply. A very positive start in the manner of the performance and we look forward to the group progressing with new players Alex, Finley, Joe, Nick and Harry finding their feet in an age group that can progress together.
